Nunavut

In 1999, the Canadian government created a new territory - Nunavut - the Northwest Territories and settled about 350 000 square kilometers with the indigenous population territorial claims. It is the Inuit - "the people", but better known to the outside world that the Inuit (the name they were centuries ago by the Cree Indians, meaning "eaters of raw meat").

Nunavut means "our land" in Inuktitut, is a broad and ambitious desert has over the Canadian Arctic archipelago and the region of tundra known as "Badlands" between Hudson Bay. and the Arctic Ocean covers an area of 1.9 million square kilometers - as big as Alaska and California combined - and yet contains only 26,000 inhabitants scattered in 28 isolated communities (see Figure 33.1) are Inuit. 85 percent of the population, the rest being mainly freshmen, professionals and technical workers from southern Canada. like most, the Inuit to take political control of the territory and its potential wealth of mineral resources. Tourism also offers opportunities for development, and it is an area in which Inuit guides and outfitters, with its unique know-how skills and country improvisation, and play an important role. Inuit communities are involved in the management of national parks have been designated for the territory.

Arctic regions are now seen as pristine wilderness areas, and visitors are not part of the growing movement of ecotourism. This contrasts with the previous position of the Arctic as a "white hel" Explorers an endurance test for disaster expeditions in search of the Northwest Passage West to Asia or a route to the North Pole. Peary and Amundsen, who were willing to learn survival techniques and Inuit adapt to the environment, were consistently more successful than those who brought their cultural baggage with them, as the Franklin Expedition unhappy. tourists can now trace these trips in comfort and matter of days rather than the months or years leading explorers through:
_ Accessibility caused by aviation, particularly Twin Otter charter aircraft are able to land on ice or gravel tracks
_ Advances in cooling technology applied to clothing, equipment and housing
_ The end of the Cold War, which opened the Arctic previously closed by Russia and the Western powers for strategic reasons - for example, it is now possible for tourists to cruise in the passage of the Northwest of the Atlantic Provediniya as the Russian side of the Bering Strait in a single summer.

Tourism should also help revive Inuit culture and economic well-being. In the 1950s, the secular way of life is still based on hunting caribou and marine mammals for subsistence, although marketed Arctic fox fur to the Hudson's Bay Company, in exchange for firearms, snuff and tea. Changes in fashion and the subsequent price collapse caused the Inuit skin become much more dependent on social welfare programs implemented by the Canadian government. Permanent settlement of wooden buildings replaced tents skin robot used in summer and winter igloos. Dog teams have largely replaced
snowmobile (snowmobile) in the words of a young Inuk are "fast, do not eat meat, and does not stink" (cited in Davis, 1998). However, the traditional image persists in the outside world.

Although significant improvements have been made safer life for the Inuit, who had a high degree of social dislocation due to the rapid evolution of the Stone Age nomadic culture with a common ethos, dominated by systems Western technology and value. Social problems arising include a large amount of alcohol and drugs and a suicide rate six times the national average. A low level of education leaves her vulnerable to manipulation by outside commercial interests Inuit communities. The birth rate is much higher than in southern Canada, which is a demographic time bomb "as more young people entering the labor market with unrealistic expectations of this new territory can provide. All this has implications for the economic development in Nunavut, including the nascent tourism industry.
